Fort Sill – Getting a Pass

#vanlife .

We have been onto other military facilities in our travels such as White Sands. We knew that they would need to see ID and check our background.

We assumed that the gate nearest the museum would be the place we needed to go. Google also took us to that gate. However the young soldier said we and Google were mistaken. He sent us to Sheridan Road and Visitor Control Center (the VCC).

Once we found the Visitors Control, the officer onsite insisted we use the automated machines. The screen was blank and did not come to life when I touched it. When we finally got the officer to come back he placed his hand on it and it finally came to life. He then said just follow the on screen instructions…and he disappeared, again.

As more people arrived the officer finally came out of his hiding spot but still seemed reluctant to help out. When Mrs Ram was done the machine reset without providing a pass. We asked the officer and had her step aside and I started. Within seconds of stepping away, Mrs Ram received a text saying she was approved. Now she had to wait in line again.

The second time through she found it easier but had to go through all the screens again. The picture screen was the toughest because even on tip toe she couldn’t get her face high enough to be in frame. That is when the officer finally said that the camera is adjustable.

Once we had our passes we were clearly expected to leave.

Yet we had no idea how to find Geronimo’s grave or the museum. Apparently Visitors Control’s mission does not include actually helping visitors.
