Western Castle

#vanlife .

Mrs Ram fancied a trip to a castle and originally thought one in Texas might fit the bill. But a number of poor reviews dissuaded her from stopping at the bakery to get tickets for it.

The Glen Eyrie Castle in Colorado Springs sounded more promising.

Our tour started with a short video and talk by a guide. The guide asked several questions from her audience. Mr Ram was the only one in the crowd willing to jump in with an answer.

General Palmer who had made his money in railroads, built this Castle for his wife, Queen. It seemed odd that he had a bathroom next to his bedroom but his wife did not. And though they had over 30 guest rooms, there were only 5 bathrooms.

As we toured the castle, it reminded us of the mansions in Newport RI. However it was smaller and seemed less ostentacoius.

Since this a working hotel now there were several rooms that we could not see. We did see Queen’s bedroom and the great hall.

At the end of the tour Mrs Ram asked about a door in the side of the hill by the carriage house.  It was a utility corridor as well as walkway for servants up to the castle.

It seems more mansion than castle to me but Mrs Ran had seen her castle and we did not need to go to Europe to see it.
