Wild west camping – with a sheriff

#vanlife .

We were up at 5 am, microwaved two coffees and off to secure a camp site in Yellowstone.

Once I get the video from our Garmin, getting off of that mountain will be a post all it own.

Our drive in was uneventful.  We passed through the entrance with no line and did not even need to show our pass.  One buffalo made a half hearted attempt at blocking the road but we were able to sneak by him.

We arrived at Tower Fall Campground just after 7 am.  That put us 9th inline for a campsite.  Three other groups came in after us. The sheriff, camp host Bob, thought there would be up to 15 sites available.

Now the waiting.  When will the occupants of each h site that renews that morning wake up? Will they renew or move on?

Bob made a round of the camp site and three people were moving on.  Three groups got lucky and were now 6th in line.

One woman noted that quiet hours were over.  Did anyone have an air horn handy?

Bob makes another round. A couple other groups are leaving but three are renewing.  Now we are 4th with seven left.

We notice a older man walk-in up to the registration area, he grabs a slip and renews. Now we are 4th with six possible.

Mrs Ram checks the sites that are left – one is maybe OK, the others are just not level enough for us

Bob comes back again and now we are #1 and the site we can make work is still a possibility.

Waiting, waiting… another round for Bob and finally we win.  We have e a site in Yellowstone.  It’s not ideal but it is a place to park our house.

But we still need to wait.  The people on our site want to have breakfast and clean up before leaving.

While we are waiting I am talking to one the others waiting. Both of us had been hoping for better sites.  Maybe we could make a deal.  His site was ch level and mine had more shade.  We  checked with ths sheriff and he said horse trading sites was OK by him.

So we ended with a decent site after all.

And those last two groups in line?  One was tenting and the other had a small RV.  They ended up sharing a site.
