Sadly our time in the warmth was coming to an end. We passed through Augusta on what would be one of our last comfortable days for a while. We avoided going near the Augusta National Golf Club – The Masters Tournament was in full swing and we wanted to avoid any traffic from it.
Stopping at the Augusta Canal Heritage Area, we took in the view of the Savannah River from the Head Gates and Locks.
The tow path there sounded like it would be a great, flat ride. It starts at the headgate and was a nice level path. What it lacked was pavement. The dirt was ok for our ride but cycling in mud would have been terrible.
We were also met with another surprise – hills. Months in Florida had wiped memories of hills from our minds. The parking area felt like it was tacked on to the side of a mountain. It was so steep that Mrs Ram chose to walk back to our van Sparty rather than ride.
After our ride, we had a half-hour drive north to the Modoc Campground in South Carolina. Every site is located on the water and we look forward to returning. Some additional thoughts on the campground are here.
We did wonder about the people in the neighboring campsite though. Our campsites are in the forest on a beautiful lake in the wilderness and they set up two large street lights above their campsite making daylight in the middle of a beautiful night.
We we’re glad there was generous spacing between campsites as well as a number of trees.
From here we traveled north to the cold and rain of North Carolina and beyond landing in Massachusetts to enjoy more cold and even a sampling of snow.
Driving the interstate through central Florida, billboards constantly remind you of all the alligator-themed tourist traps. One proudly says, “come and see our 16 foot gator.” But, the next alligator farm roadside ad created some anxiety. It said, “Hey kids, don’t miss our petting zoo!”
Sounds like a petting zoo I would want to avoid.
