Grassland and hills.  The Badlands has carved rocks and the Blackhills adds lots of pines.

Where to stay

That is the question - especially on a summer weekend night

Badlands Interior Campground and Motel

Sage Creek

Big Pines Campground

Things to do

Badlands are a great place to dive through and take a short hike.  If you have more time camp at Sage Creek and see some Buffalo close up.

Blackhills - Lots of tall pines and surprisingly few bugs during our visit.  Rushmore and Jewel Cave are worth the trip.  Custer and Hill are small, tourist towns that are worth a stop.  Deadwood is very touristy.  Stop by Belle Fourche for the Rodeo if you are here in Late June.

On our next trip we are hoping to see Wind Cave, SD Air and Space Museum, Ride more on the Mickelson Trail and explore Spearfish and its Canyon more.  Lead also has an gold mine at the visitors center.

Rapid City - Dinosaur Park is great...if you under the age of 8.  Yes I did enjoy it.
