Many of us have some passing knowledge of this battle about an arrogant Custer who underestimated his foe. The park helps you understand the context of this battle in the overall scope of Indian Treaties and Wars in the west. Its easy to forget that the US Army and Custer were trying to enforce treaties and contain Indians not kill them. The Indians were trying to preserve their way of life and defend their families.
Being on the battlefield makes you realize how chaotic it must of been. There are markers showing where army soldiers fell in battle. There are also a few for the Indians as well.
Taking a drive out to the Reno-Benteen encampment shows the distance separating Custer from the reinforcements that did not come in time.
Overall a stunning victory for the Indians. However it became a reason to increase forces in the west and eventual lead to the end of the Indian wars.
