After a night in the El Paso Cabela’s parking lot, we headed to the Border Patrol Museum to learn more about the border we would soon be sleeping next to and the people who guard it.
The Border Patrol had it’s beginnings as the Texas Mounted Guard in 1904. Oddly they concentrated on keeping Chinese from crossing our southern border.
Prohibition forced congress to tighten border control and they passed the Labor Appropriation Act of 1924 which officially established the Border Patrol.
Through the years the Border Patrol has stopped many from crossing into the US illegally and those smuggling items. They had a number of methods people have used on display.
Like at the missile range, dogs are a key part of the team.
We got to experience the border patrol later that day as we rolled through a checkpoint heading south on Interstate 10 from El Paso. We passed the dog sniff test and had a quick chat with a border patrol officer.
