As we wandered the agricultural booths at the Calgary stampede we noticed one for canola. We had seen the flowering yellow fields of it in Montana and Alberta and stopped by to learn more.
We were surprised to learn that canola was not a “natural” plant. It was bred from rapeseed plants to lower erucic acid, giving it better health and cooking properties. Renaming it Canada’s Oil or Canola I am sure helped with marketing.
They had a hand press that squeezed the seeds making the raw, dark oil. Mr Ram tried the leftover pressings. That usual go to animal feed and he thought they didn’t taste bad.
They were also giving away bottles of canola oil with your picture on it. It was free so how could we pass that up.
