After “enjoying” a hot overnight stay at the Chesterfield Walmart, we headed to Weldon Springs Trailhead of the Katy Trail for a bike ride.
It was packed dirt with a good amount of shade and flat. While riding we realized that one of the Missouri Wine Trails and the bike trail follow the same path. You can cycle from winery to winery. We chose to drive.
We were excited by the number of wineries and stopped at the first one we saw, Defiance Ridge. The wines were good but we were surprised that they were selling wine from Washington. We wish they had explained that before our tasting.
Other wineries did have their own wines but seemed geared to cycling through large crowds. Here for a tasting? 4 pours for $4. Pay first, pick your wines. Maybe buy some, move along. No history of the winery or overview of the wines. No “Where are from?” Wine details were on a sheet. One winery clearly had been a school with a door labeled Principal. When I asked about it the employee had no idea.
There were some good wines and we bought a few but it was not as fun as visiting wineries in other areas like Pennsylvania, Arizona or New Mexico.
Stone Hill in Hermann, MO was the exception. When we were uncertain about doing a tasting, Rob help us review possible selections for our tasting. And we enjoyed seeing there large wine cellar
We had a great time and bought some Blackberry wine, Vidal Blanc and Port for the road.
