Elmo (rro)

#vanlife .

While I was researching places to see, I found El Morro National Monument.  We had no idea what it was but we liked the name.  The web site is  https://www.nps.gov/ELMO/index.htm

This rock formation and box canyon was home to many Indians around 1300.  Similar to Tuzigoot they lived in a multi room building on the top and farmed below.

The half mile hike up was a challenge since this is over 7000 feet elevation but there are great views.  Mrs Ram over came her fear if height to walk across the top and down the other side.

This spot had also been a rest stop for centuries and many had carved there name into the rocks.

Of course, like Pompey’s Pillar, it is now illegal to add you name.

This definitely worth a stop to take the 2 mile hike, see the ruins, and check the inscriptions.  You can also stay at the campground there which has 9 sites, pit toilets and water that did not taste that bad.  And it’s all free.
