The Bar
In 2017 we stopped at the Florabama on a Sunday morning and found that sermons are much easier to absorb with a drink in your hand. We had even picked up a book about the history of the bar and met the author. The one thing we missed was hanging out at the bar at night. We were driving across the Gulf coast at the end of 2018 and the Florabama seemed like a great place to stop a few days before New Years.
Arriving a little after 6pm on a Saturday we had to pay a cover charge of $5 each. If we had been just a bit faster driving across Alabama we could have saved $10. Mr Ram opted for a Yuengling – a beer he had not seen west of the Mississippi – while Mrs Ram choose Florabama Jamma.
Meeting People
We met several people while listening to the band play. Steve and his buddy Dick were both southern boys and Mrs Ram enjoyed talking with them. Mr Ram liked them as well and he could understand Steve. Mr Ram and Dick struggle to commuincate. After a few drinks Mr Rams Boston accent can get quite thick and Dicks’ southern drawl made it seem as if they were speaking different languages. Luckily Mrs Ram could understand both and translated what she could hear over the bands music.
Mrs Ram has met many alumni from her Alma Mater, Michigan State. People wearing MSU T-shirts and hats would give her a high five or shout out, “Go Green.” Mr Ram has only seen a couple of people wearing MIT gear. When he starts talking to them, it is a friend or one of their kids who went to MIT. At the Florabama, Mrs Ram saw MIT emblazoned on on a sweatshirt. This time the wearer is actually an MIT alum.
Niko graduated in the 90s with a couple of degrees. I know he told me what they were but this is a bar and all of us had been drinking so I do not remember. We enjoyed talking and listening to music and posing by the license plates.
