Fredericksburg

Our base for our stay in Fredericksburg was the KOA located just outside of town. We had a great tent site just across from the bathrooms. One downside to this campground were the free range cats and chickens.

The town was decked out for the holidays with a huge Merry Christmas sign across the road. A Christmas tree, Nativity scene and German holiday sculpture filled the green.

With the towns German history, we expected to see buildings using a Bavarian style. What we found was more reminiscent of Pennsylvania than Germany. The downtown was like many other tourist town with lots of little shops trying to entice you into buying things. We did have tasty though pricey gulash and bratwurst at Der Lindenbaum.

The area is also known for its wineries and we expected to spend quite a bit of time sampling and stocking up. We were shocked to discover tastings were $20. Many wineries we have been to the tastings are free or cost up to $6. Even in Arizona where local wines were expensive, the highest tasting fee was only $12.

Since we still had several great wines from New Mexico in our wine “cellar” we opted to retaste those wines.

Enchanted Rock State Park gave us a short, steep climb for a view of the area. This had been our first choice for camping but they are adamant about tent only – no sleeping in you vehicle.
