Leaving La Crosse Kansas we discovered we had really reached middle America.
And we once again found ourselves in field of windmills.
Dodge City was not as inspiring as we expected. Boothill is part of a fenced in, ticketed attraction. We opted for a walk around the downtown which did have a statue of the bull “El Capitan” – the bull that would lead all of the others to market. That was the high point of the downtown.
We set our Nav system to take us to the Fort Dodge but it took us to a Shaved Ice stand instead. With temps over 100F maybe the Nav system had a good idea.
We got out of Dodge and stopped to see the the wagon ruts. No matter how hard I squinted I could not see the ruts. Mrs Ram said they were there so I took a picture.
While getting out of Dodge we noticed some large pieces of windmills going by. Not too far away we found a large yard filled with soon to be windmills.
Our last Kansas stop was another city park, Lamar KS. For the cost of $10 we had a grassy spot to park shelter from the sun, electric power and hot showers. (Not in the women’s room! Mrs Ram).
The wind gauge was amusing. Then we noticed the scrap marks that indicated it must get quite windy some times. We were there during one of those unheard of (C)ALM periods.
We did have to admit that the western part of Kansas did get very flat
The next day I got to say those words I had been waiting almost a week to say – “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore”
