“Head for the mountains!” extolled beer commercial from the late 70’s and early 80’s. And bring some Busch beer with you. We have headed for the mountains many times and we often bring beer – good beer.
This time we were headed for one of the more well known mountain ranges – The Rockies. In the past we have done advanced planning, scouted out scenic spots, hiking trails and places to stay weeks in advance. For the Rockies, we rolled into the visit center at 4pm and asked what things we should see and which campgrounds in the park had sites available. The woman ranger behind the counter noted several spots that had great views and others with short hikes that Mrs Ram could do even with her knee issues.
She did not laugh when I asked about campsites in the park but she was clearly amused that we thought we would roll in and get a site late in the day. She slid a paper to us that listed a number of independent RV parks that might have a site. We thanked her for the list but knew would not call any of them.
Our camping apps indicated there was no free camping areas nearby so we headed to the closest National Forest Campground – Meeker. We drove in the rutted road was until we got to the trailer stuck at the turnaround. Mr Ram maneuvered Sparty out of the way but brushed up against a tree with the front wheel of his bike.
This campground was only $12 but did not seem worth it. As we headed out we noticed a woman”scratching” her face. As we passed her we notice she was “scratching” with her middle figure. Sparty is just a big white box with seemingly no offensive signs or stickers so we had no idea why she was giving the finger. Maybe she saw our plates and thought, “Massholes”
The next campground, Olive Ridge, had no water but had better roads, lots of sites and no cranky women giving us the finger. We settled in for a pleasant night and headed for the mountains in the morning.
