Traveling across Wyoming, there are lots of rolling plains and hills and wind. For those traveling west by wagon train, it was hard to tell where you were. And then you came to Independence Rock.
Yep, a big rock plunked down right by the trail. Like other rocks such as Pompey’s Pillar, Newspaper Rock or El Morro, people carved their names on it. However they did not do a very good job because none of them were readable.
Independence Rock was a great place to take a break for those traveler. One sign indicated that kids would often play on the backside of the massive rock. Some would not hear when their wagons getting ready to leave and some were left behind. A few were fortunate to be picked up soon after by a subsequent group of wagons.
