After visiting St George Falls, we stopped at the visitor center which was also Granite Farms store, a gift shop and a Stihl dealer. The woman told us there was a free ferry that we could take to nearby Deer Island. When she said the ferry was free and big enough for our van Sparty, we knew we had to try it.
There were already a few people in line when we arrived so we could follow a local onto the ferry.
The ferry arrives and off loads those coming to the maineland. Then it sits. We wondered what we were waiting for as the departure time ticked closer.
Then a horn sounds and we head for the ferry. The crew directs the vehicles to one of three lanes. Small vehicles are pointed to the side lines while big trucks and trailers fill the center lane. Sparty was considered small and enjoyed the view by the side.
You can check out a video here.
As we approached the landing they dropped the ramp and quickly directed people off.
The views were beautiful. Most shops were closed but Mr Ram liked this collection of buoys .
We stopped by Old Sow Whirlpool but it was not whirling. It only whirls at the tide change and we were much too early.
For our return we were first in line. We knew to wait for the horn and go where directed.
Return seas were choppy and Sparty did get a little wet and salty. Our GPS also had some interesting directions midway through our ferry ride back.
When the ramp dropped back on the maineland we were thankful that both crossings were uneventful. Had the ferry gone down we would loose our vehicle, our house and all of our belongings.
Sparty now his sea legs so who knows where he might want to go
