When Mrs Ram added the WASP Museum to our itinerary, I expected a lesson on bugs. What we found in Sweetwater, TX was a museum dedicated to the women aviators who served in World War 2.
Jordan was our personal guide to introduce us to the WASP Museum. She admitted she was new at this but was a great guide and was able to answer all of our questions. She had no Hagrid moments like our guide at Bent’s Fort.
Women who volunteered for WASP training initially had higher prerequisite qualifications than men pilots. They used borrowed uniforms in training that they had to return.
Once they had completed their training they replaced men in pulling targets for live fire and ferrying planes to the front lines.
They were not given commissions they were promised making them civilians. That plight was reminiscent of the Merchant Marines who served the war effort but received reduced pay and were denied benefits.
The WASP unit had one thing no other group in World War 2 had. Their logo at the top of this post was designed by Disney.
