I sit here many miles from a paved road watching buffalo eating their dinner and wonder about my fellow travelers. This out of the way spot in the Badlands is far from the areas well known attractions, the Wall. Yet many have made the trek down the long, bumpy dirt road to a place with pit toilets and no running water.
The Jeep Wrangler next to a tent makes sense as does the 4 wheel drive Toyota Tacoma with a pop up camper cap. And having met some VW Westy people we were not surprised to see one here. A couple of regular motor homes and trailers were also not unexpected since out west one can drift off the grid for several days with most of the comfort of home.
Others where unexpected like the family from NJ with several horses in tow. More surprising was the recently engaged couple in a tiny Honda Fit, the group in a Chevy Volt or the three guys on bikes.
But what made me really wonder was that one guy traveling in a Lincoln Town Car . If you are traveling I guess you might as well do it in style even if it is off road. Or the other guy with his entire life in a Budget truck. If you are traveling you might as well take it all with you.
We all travel in different ways for different reasons. Tomorrow we will all be somewhere else. But today we all share this spot, eating our dinner with the Buffalo.
