Some think of dunes, others think of missiles when one mentions White Sands. We chose both.
Sand. We expect large piles of it at an ocean beach. We were surprised by the sand dunes in Michigan.
The Great Sand Dunes were piled next to the Sangre De Cristo Mountains in Colorado. They were impressive, reminding us of dunes you see in movies.
The White Sands Dunes are not as large as the Great Sand Dunes but their color makes you feel like you are driving through the tundra, minus the ice and cold.
Like the snow of a winter wonderland plows are required since the dunes move and cover the picnic areas and roads.
We both enjoyed playing in the “snow.”
Our next stop was the White Sands Missile Range. Getting into their museum was free. However a background check was required. Mrs Ram was cleared quickly. It took them nearly 10 minutes to finally clear Mr Ram. Mrs Ram wondered what they found in his background.
The museum had a number of missiles on display outside including the Patriot that Mr Ram had worked on.
Inside was a complete V2 rocket.
It is always surprising to find dogs are better than technology at finding things. Rader would provide a general area that things landed but the “Missile Dogs” found the missiles parts buried in the sand.
Their collection also included sounding rockets, old phone switch boards, stuffed game animals and Darth Vader’s mask.
We did not find any plans for a death star.
