West Virginia’s first capital was originally located in the far north city of Wheeling where they voted to remain in the US during the Civil War. However travel to the capital before interstate highways was difficult so they voted to move it to the more centrally located Charleston.
We were worried about parking for our van Sparty in this city but they had plenty of outside parking. Coming up with quarters though was a struggle since Mr Ram had used the last of our quarters to pay for our campsite. The parking attendant help us out with that.
The capitol building has gilded dome like the one in Mass. Our tour guide filled us in on the several of the earlier capital buildings including the one that was destroyed by fire. Someone had the bright idea to store gun powder in it.
A bonus here was the free state museum that reminded us of the Archway in Nebraska. It did not span a highway but it did walk us through the history of the state starting in prehistoric times. We were surprised that WV was the marble king.
Of course only the best dressed fleas can be found in WV and they hang out at the museum.
