Vidalia Onion Museum

#vanlife .

We are no longer surprised about the number of unique museums there are across the country. However we are surprised how specific some of them are.  The museum we found near Santa Claus Georgia was not just any Onion Museum, it was a Vidalia Onion Museum.

Brenda at the museum visitors desk explained that only sweet onions from specific counties in Georgia are allowed to use the trademarked name Vidalia. And if you want a true Vadalia onion at the market, you should look for the produce code 4159.

Since we saw many onions being harvested on our drive, we thought we could buy some very fresh onions right from the source. Brenda told us that Vidalia onions cannot be sold before April 20.  We were out of luck.

We toured the small museum and watched the Onion Music Video. Mr Ram enjoyed playing with the kids onion sorter.

And learning about the official sizes.

Too early to buy an onion and too early for the Annual Onion Festival which is the last weekend in April.  Maybe we can stop by next year.

We continued north knowing that in a few weeks we could get delicious Vidalia onions at the market.  We just need to check for their official code – 4159.

  1. I thought for a couple sour people like you that you would not need to wait for a sweet Vidalia onion.
