When we were headed to Prescott pronounced Press-kit), there was an accident that stopped traffic. A quick look at the map and we realized there were no alternate routes.
Rather than inch along we stopped at Mortimer Farms hoping that traffic would clear. We had strawberry scones and fudge for dinner and watched the traffic build. With sunset at hand we figured we should find a forest road and call it a night.
We took out our Prescott Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map that we had picked up at the ranger station in Camp Verde. Roads with dots next to them are ones you can camp.
There were three roads not too far away. We figured one of them would have a flat spot.
As we approached the first one, 9002Y, we realized it was an ATV only road. Forest Road 531 was driveable but we discovered it had no pull outs to camp. Now it was dark.
No more searching. The map had a camp ground about 20 minutes away. We rolled into Powell Springs Campground and were swarmed by all kind of bugs as soon as we stopped. This is when we were glad that we really do not need to get out and set up.
So the moral here is do not always trust those maps and have a back up campground just in case.
