Sunset Crater National Monument

#vanlife .

Heading north from Flagstaff we passed a sign for Crater National Monument. It sounded interesting so we turned off and headed to the visitors center

As we were driving in, Mr Ram noticed jagged, black rocks on the side of the road. They were remnants of an ancient lava flow from 1085 AD.

We walked out into the old Bonito Lava Flow and Mrs Ram was reminded of formations on the Big Island in Hawaii.

The dormant volcano is easily seen from the road.

For an aerial picture check here.

We like to think the land around us is stable. I am sure the locals around Flagstaff thought the same thing in the 11th century.
