Appalachian Trail in Pieces – Pennsylvania Edition

#vanlife .

Heading south from our friends place in Pennsylvania we wondered if there was a spot we could take a short hike.  Mr. Ram had hiked some sections of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in New England and had dreams of hiking other sections.

Just off of I-80 he noticed a trailhead Bernheisel Bridge Rd on the map and a section of the AT that seemed flat.  Rolling in at 8:30 in the morning, it was still cool.  The “Parking Lot” was a mowed section of grass we initially drove right by.  The large power transfer station had lots of gravel area that looked like a parking area but was obviously not the right spot.

We headed south on the trail enjoying the peace and quite of being out in the wilderness – near I-81 and construction site that was  surprisingly active on a Sunday morning.  And just to ensure we had the full wilderness experience, a helicopter kept circling over us.  We wondered if there had recently been a prison break and they were searching for someone.  Was it safe to be on the trail?

We hiked out far enough to get a view of US-11 and the headed back.  We did run into several other hikers including an older man with brightly colored donut-themed shorts.  I guess if you think you far enough out into the woods, you think you can wear anything.
