After having taken 5 years of Latin in high school, I have always been interested in the Roman Empire. And Cordoba has a few relics of that once great culture including a few columns of a Roman Temple.
However the Roman Bridge or Puenta Romano is the cities most important artifact. The bridge crosses the Guadalquivir River joining the Mezquita Cathederal and the Torre del Calahorra across the way.
The tourist blurbs lead one to believe it is a 2000 year old bridge built by the Romans. Yet looking at it, it was clear sections had not been just maintained but completely replaced.
The base supports are original but in the 800s the Moors completly rebuilt the upper part of the bridge. It was also refurbished in 2008, work that included replacing old brick with pink marble paving.
It is a beautiful bridge but it reminded me of that old joke about rhe guy boasting about his great grand dad’s axe. The one where he has replaced the handle 6 times and the head twice.
