Don’t Stare At The Sun

#vanlife .

Usually sound advice and a great song from David Beasley. But sometimes that does not get you what you need.  Especially  when the captain calls from the bridge – “We need more power!”

Between Huelva and Seville there was a different kind of solar power plant.  Instead of having acres of passive solar panels converting sunlight to electricity,  this plant was the first commercial one to concentrate the sunlight to make steam and power turbines, similar to a gas fired plant.

For a while these plants seemed like a good choice for alternative energy.  Then the cost of PV solar panels plummeted.  Many wrote off the concentrated solar power (CSP).  However it is being reconsidered now.  As part of its design it can easily store power overnight as thermal energy.

We snapped a few pictures as got closer to the point Google said was the official location of the plant.  There were several of the towers that accept the concentrated sunlight.

We were surprised to see a number of the reflectors not pointing up and lots of broken glass. When we got near the entrance we saw a huge sign in Spanish.  With the help of Google we figured the sign said  “Tho shall not take pictures.”

We figured we better turn a round and leave  before they realized we were there.
