As we entered Durango we saw our home away from home, Wal-Mart, and had to stop in. This one will let you stay but the city of Durango can ticket you. As we later saw in downtown Durango, they like to issue tickets. Though there were several other campers there we opted not sleep in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
When we stopped at the Big 5 Sporting Goods, we found inflatable, single person kayaks on sale. For $240 we had two kayaks, paddles and life jackets and we were off to Lake Nighthorse to test them.
We opened one of the Challenger K1s just to test it. The two separate chambers pumped up quickly and Mr Ram could carry it to the water. It had a large skeg on the bottom that we thought might break so we went to waist deep before getting in.
Mrs Ram found it easier to paddle than she expected and it tracked ok. Mr Ram could not get in it with water shoes on. With shoes off he managed to squeeze into it. The kayak was just too small for him. Both went back and our search for an inflatable continues.
Our search for beer and entertainment the next day was better. The DoubleTree Beirgarten had so-so beer but good music. We also had the additional entertainment of a 4 year old who enjoyed the music.
The Steamworks had several excellent brews including the chili spiced Prescribed Burn. We pared it with Maui Wowie pizza that also had chillis and our mouths were on fire.
