Fort Bowie

#vanlife .

Driving in to Chiricarhua we saw a sign for Fort Bowie. We expected it would be a short side trip before hitting wineries near Wilcox AZ. Our GPS said it would be over an hour to get there.

I had forgotten to turn off avoid unpaved roads.

Once we were on the correct, dirt road we saw this sign.

A mile and a half hike? Mrs Ram was not happy. Today was supposed to be a non-hiking day.

Mrs Ram called the number and they said they did have a small parking lot for those who have issues. Anyone who knows us knows we have lots of issues.

We drove through Apache Pass to Fort Bowie. The Ranger told us of the for beginnings during the Civil War. Later it was one of many forts used to fight Geronimo and was his jail for a short time after he was captured.

By 1887 the fort had a dance hall and an ice machine to provide cool drinks. Soon after it was decided the fort was not needed and was abandoned.
