For our first hike here we chose the Rojo Grande trail. It was rated as a moderate hike but we found it easy.
From our Spanish lessons we knew the trail name meant “Big Red”. We thought that was because of the red rocks and dirt of the trail.
A sign at the trail head let us know that the trail was named for J.M. “Red” Spicer. He spent much of his time over 25 years on trails in The Palo Duro State Park.
A quick check on line found that he had also been an ultra runner, bootlegger and military policeman. Presumably those last two were not at the same time.
However he is remembered most as the conscience of Palo Duro Canyon.
