We stopped by the President Eisenhower Library Abilene KS though we knew it was under renovation.
The movies give an overview of a man who came from simple begings to liberate Europe from the Nazis and lead the greatest nation. They also had interviews with family and friends. From them we learn that he enjoyed his grand kids but did expect them to keep their grades up. I did like his grilling apron that said,”Hail to the Chef”
The mini museum set up in the library had a time line with events happening in the world an in Ike’s life. There a hand full of displays with objects from the museum such one his sidearms and his pilots license.
His child home was part of the site and we could see his modest up bringing.
Mrs Ram saw a sewing machine like her mom’s and a yarn holder we had in our house.
The guide noted that Ike’s mom listened to war updates on her radio to here her Don’s voice. She also said his father was a refrigeration engineer for a local dairy.
As I walked through the it was reminiscent of another place we had been – Graceland. All of the good events in a persons life are displayed while most of the bad is not. Items such as the downing of Powers U2 plane and the partitioning of Korea are noted but their impact is not discussed.
Yet the museum does make you yearn for a time when great men were called to serve our country and they did. The prayer hung in the Eisenhower Chapel and final resting place is one that we wish politicians of today would embrace.
