Mrs Ram picked this book up in Galveston TX from the 98 year old author for $16.
The author, Chick Harvey, wrote it after watching a History Channel “documentary” that said there were no troops in Wutzburg and that it did not need to be bombed. Yet his unit spent days fighting there both before and after the bombing.
His unit was one of first groups into Dachua. What he saw still haunts him and he is furious some deny the camps ever existed
He also includes stories of life as an average infantryman during the war. Scrounging for food as they advanced was normal. Daliances with farmers daughters was not just a punch line to a joke. And they were always on the search for souvenirs.
As bad as things were at times they still took time to play practical jokes. Pulling the pin on a deactivated grenade caught several of their buddies.
I am glad I read this book. Yet, as with many other self published books, a good editor could have removed duplicated stories and made the book easier to read.
