We had been through the New River Gorge last year but I never did get to writing about it. This year we sped through on our way to a wedding in Fairmont WV but did manage to stop for a hike on the Long Point Trail.
I will say it wasn’t our first choice. We had a flat, short hike in Brush Creek Preserve that included a waterfall. Since Mrs Ram had both neck surgery and a biopsy this year. However Google Maps on my phone had other plans for us. It kept loosing track of where we were, saying “Exit now”, “NO wait in 12 miles!” “No keep going”, then “MY BAD”. It would be a 24 mile round trip to get back to the correct exit is should have directed us down in the first place. We choose to drive on.
We opted to go to our Plan B hike in the New River Gorge. We also decided to use Waze and the Garmin built into our van.
The Long point Trail saves most of its elevation for that last few tenths of a mile. It was nearly 100 ft additional drop to the great view. We decided that this view was good enough. And it came with a comfortable rock to sit on and have a snack.

When we have been hiking we often run into people who smell. Sometimes they smell bad from hiking a lot or good from recently having showered. On this hike we were overcome by a hiker that smelled like he had used an entire can of AXE. We vowed to finish our hike before he returned. Alas we a few hundred yards short when that wave of smell over took us.
And its probably time to post about our last trip through here.
