I posted about the first failed headlight in our Promaster van Sparty. I have not mentioned that it has happened a couple of times more. One dealer had so much trouble with the drivers side they just replaced the entire headlight assembly (under warranty).
Replacing that bulb is not a simple reach-in and quarter turn to remove the old bulb and the reverse to install a new one. I spent nearly two hours over two days trying to do it that way. You need to take off two trim pieces and pull the entire headlight assembly.
Once you have that out you can unscrew the access cover and remove the failed bulb. To reinsert the new bub, it needs to align exactly or it will not slide and click in.
Check out a video here if you want more details on this.
That would not be so bad if the bulbs lasted for 100,000 miles. For us they seem to last about 20k to 30k miles.
Our driving often includes roads that many would not consider actual roads. Especially in the west, pavement is often not an option. That might contribute to our bulb failure. However when the passenger side headlight bulb failed again at 45k miles, I hoped I could find something that might be more robust.
I searched the Promaster forum and found some that replaced the standard bulb with and an LED bulb. That sounded promising until I read that the bulbs did not quite fit and some resorted to sealant or duct tape to secure them.
Others noted that the new Promasters were coming with a longer life bulb, L0000H7SLL. That sounded closer to what I was looking for. You can order it on line for under $10. For us it was easier to pick it up at a Molloy Ram in Albuquerque for $15. They did need to order it but it was in the next day.
Now we wait to see how long this one lasts.
