Safe Routes in a City?

#vanlife .

We often follow one of our Nav systems to get to places. Google or Garmin will give you the fastest or shortest route. But is it safe?

On our way to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum, we roll up to a traffic light already wondering if we were in a safe part of town. Any Traveller needs to note the conditions of buildings, amount of grafitti and trash and the sketchiness of people walking around.

We saw a group of teens leaveing a Burger King. They stopped at the corner next to us as we sat waiting for the light to turn green. One girl started hitting another girl in the group. I am deeply wishing this light would change. I do not want to be a witness.

Then they start moving towards the van. Now I don’t want to become part of the fight.

That’s when the group dragged them back onto the side walk. Their friends must have decided that it was ok for them to resolve their issues physically but they did not want to risk them getting rundown by a crazy old guy in a van.

The light changed and we were finally on our way wishing there were a Safe Routes option in the settings of our Nav systems.
