The ship wreck museum is at the light house on Whitefush point just outside of Paradise MI.
Whitefish Bay would have been that safe area for the Edmund Fitzgerald. It seemed like an appropriate place for this museum.
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is well known to any of us that grew up in the late 20th century. Gordon Lightfoot ensured we wouldn’t forget the 29 souls that went down in a storm in November on Lake Superior.
It is chillier there than other part of the UP but that didn’t deter the mosquitoes. Museum personnel had those electrified tennis racquets to zap the many mosquitoes that snuck into the museum buildings.
The museum itself catalogued a number of the wrecks in Lake Superior. We had always thought they were caused by the weather. Many were caused by stupidity. Captain Anderson of the Alberta said nothing would stop her Majestys mail after he ramming and sinking the John M Osborne.
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerakd was not stupidity. The ship and crew were making a run they made before. As weather deteriorated, they lost radar, both bildge pumps were running and the ship started listing. And then they were gone.
The bell from the wreck has been recovered and new bell installed on the ship listing all of those that perished. The ship is now a memorial.
